UCL Matchday 2 Preview: Group C & D


The UEFA Champions league returns on Tuesday, 1st October and the fans of European clubs and leagues are excited. It’s a new week of European football and we want to look at the teams that are bound to clash in Group C and D on matchday 2 of the UCL 2019/20 campaign. In Group C, we have a resurgent Manchester City host Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta host Shaktar Donetsk. In Group D, we have Juventus to face Bayer Leverkusen at home and Athletico Madrid travel to Russia to face Lokomotiv Moscow. It promises to be an exciting round of European football and the fans are hyped to see their teams compete at this big stage.


Manchester City vs Dinamo Zagreb

Manchester City, who are looking confident with 4 consecutive wins are looking to make it 5 in as many games. The wins include a 3-0 thrashing of Shaktar Donetsk in the opening game of this UCL campaign. The Pep Guardiola’s side were able to get 3 goals past there Ukrainian opponents despite the absense of their lead striker-Aguero. They continued in their stream of performance in the league when they put 8 goals past a struggling Watford. A League Cup victory to Preston North End and EPL victory over Everton see them win 4 in 4 games.

Dinamo Zagreb, the croatian giant are to be seen as the underdogs in this fixture against Manchester City. The croatian side that put up an excellent performance in matchday one which saw them defeat Atalanta 4-0 to go top of Group C. They have behind then a two games win record in their domestic league and are looking forward to upsetting the odds against their hosts.


Juventus vs Bayer Leverkusen

Juventus look to get their first UCL win as ther host the German side Bayer Leverkusen. Juventus gave up a two-goal lead versus Atetico Madrid on matchday one are hoping to get all three points at home. They have won all three of their Serie A fixtures since then, netting twice each time. All three victories saw the ‘Bianconeri’ score exactly once in each half, and keep a clean sheet in the last hour of play. The return of their biggest talismanic figure, Cristiano Ronaldo assures a boost in their attack and also in their chances to securing a win. Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Juventus in their last Serie A game against SPAL in a 2-0 at home. He looks forward to getting his first UCL goal for this campaign, a competition has proven to be his favorite. As they go into the game, they only worry about their home record against German teams. They have only managed to win 1 in 5 games (D2 L2) against German sides in the UCL.

Bayer Leverkusen who lost their opening game at home to Lokomotiv Moscow (2-1), find themselves with bigger fishes to fry as they face Juventus away from home. They could boast of a 2 games consecutive win form and hope that is enough to build confidence against Juventus. They go to Turin as underdogs and hope to get their first win and keep their UCL campaign hopes alive.


Locomotiv Moscow vs Athletico Madrid

Locomotiv Moscow currently sits at the top of the Group D table. They started their UCL campaign with a win over Bayer Leverkusen and are hoping to make it two as they host Athletico Madrid at home. The Russian side are confident of getting all three points despite not getting a win in 3 H2H clashes against Athletico (D1,L2). The Russians tend to start well when they win, and are usually leading at half-time in four of their previous five home league victories.

Athletico Madrid, who saw their first UCL game of this campaign end in a draw at home look forward to get back to winning ways against their hosts in Russia. Joao Felix, the new wonderkid who has a good away goal record hopes to get on the scoresheet and put his team ahead early in the game. They have seen two of their last three games end in a barren draw but hope to get more goals as they make the trip to Russia on Tuesday.
