Serie A roundup: Mkhitaryan scores on debut, 10-man Milan edges Verona
Roma 4-2 Sassuolo
Arsenal’s outcast – Henrikh Mkhitaryan made the headlines on his debut for Roma with a blistering goal in the 22nd minute. The Armenian national football team captain and Roma midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan was impressive in his debut for the Italian Giants. With an impressive 82.2% accuracy on 45 passes, the midfielder made three key passes and a lone shot on goal that ended up in the back of the net.
The Armenian’s goal was the third of the four that Roma put past Sassuolo in the first 45 minutes of the match. With a headed goal off of a corner kick, Bryan Cristante gave the home side an early lead. Seven minutes later, Edin Dzeko scored the second for match and his second for the season. At the 33rd minute, Justin Kluivert had a sublime finish in the box to put Roma 4 goals up in the first.
Despite being outclassed in the first half, Sassuolo’s silver lining showed up in the final 45 minutes: Domenico Berardi. A wonder free-kick opened the scoring for the 24-year-old, who eventually sealed his brace in 72nd minute. The captain has scored five goals in two league matches this season.
With a lot of confidence under their belt, Roma travel to Bologna next, while Sassuolo host SPAL.
Verona 0-1 AC Milan
AC Milan were able to get a close win away at Verona despite coming down to 10-men late in the game. Regardless of the fashion at which they are getting results, they are still chances of them being impressive. The win has Marco Giampaolo’s side seventh in the table only three points behind leaders and neighbour rivals Inter Milan.
Verona were really impressive despite losing a player early in the game. They were threatening with a few chances and a half-bicycle effort that was no match for Milan’s sturdy defense line.
A penalty that came from Amir Rrahmani (Verona) handling the ball in the box in the 65th minute was all it took to make a difference in the scoreline. Marco Silvestri (Verona) was able to put his hand to the ball when Krzysztof Piatek (AC Milan) struck but was unable to keep the ball from getting past him. And with that goal, Milan got away with all three points.
