Chelsea seal £53m deal for Timo Werner
Chelsea have completed the £53million signing of Timo Werner from RB Liepzig on a five-year deal.
Werner moving to Chelsea was probably the most open secret in the entire world for a long while.
The German has eventually put pen to paper in a deal that will see him earn £175,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge; his salary is expected to rise in the coming years.
Liverpool’s loss is Chelsea’s gain
Frank Lampard, with the help of Chelsea’s club director, Marina Granovskaia, perfected a coup as they snatched Timo Werner from Liverpool.
Jurgen Kloop is thought to have a very close relationship with Werner, which fueled links of the player’s move to Liverpool.
The Reds however stalled when it mattered most as they refused to submit an official bid to RB Liepzig for Timo Werner.
Chelsea, sensing the lackluster attitude of Liverpool towards the deal, made a brisk move for Werner. Out of the blues, personal terms were reached between the player and the club. Read more
An announcement was made to that effect and Chelsea agreed to pay the £53million release clause for Timo Werner.
The 24-year old expressed his pride and delight in completing the switch.
“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club.
“I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart.
“I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.” Timo Werner said.
Chelsea’s club director, Marina Granovskaia, said the club can’t wait to have “Timo on board”.
“We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea.
“He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.
“We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season.” said Marina.
Chelsea will have to wait until July 1 before Werner joins because the 24-year old is tied by contract to RB Leipzig until June 30; the player is expected to play in Leipizig’s next two games.
