Arsenal vs Sheffield United – the Blades put Gunners to the sword
Arsenal suffered more disappointment away from home as they lost 1-0 to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
The Gunners always have a frustrating outing whenever they play at Bramall Lane. They lost against the Blades by the same scoreline when the two teams last played in the Premier League back in 2006 and yesterday’s match was no different.
Arsenal’s penalty appeal when John Egan dragged Sokratis in the box while defending a corner six minutes into the game was ignored by the referee, Unai Emery’s [Arsenal] record signing Nicolas Pepe missed a sitter from six-yards out midway into the first-half.
Sheffield United strike on the half-hour mark
Oliver Norwood delivered an inviting corner that was knocked down by Jack O’Connell and the move was completed by Lys Mousset who converted from close range.
The Blades thought they’d get a penalty when Sead Kolasinac brought down George Baldlock. Arsenal returned fire quickly to register their second penalty appeal of the night when Saka and Egan collided in Sheffield’s United box.
Mike Dean didn’t think it was enough to award Arsenal a penalty, instead he booked Saka for diving – the booking caused angry reactions from Arsenal’s bench as assistant coach Ljungberg [Arsenal] got a yellow card for his trouble.
Arsenal’s efforts to equalise didn’t materialise
Granit Xhaka’s ferocious shot was well saved by Henderson to maintain Sheffield United lead into the half-time break.
Dani Ceballos replaced Joe Willock at the start of the second-half. The Spaniard could have equalized when Saka found him with a pinpoint cross but he couldn’t place his shot well.
Alexandre Lacazette replaced Xhaka in the 60th minute. The Frenchman won a free-kick that was taken by Nicolas Pepe, the Ivorian curled his effort above the wall into the safe hands of Henderson.
Calum Chambers’ shot went across the face of goal, Kolasinac’s header was a few inches above the crossbar.
In the end it was Chris Wilder’s men who deservedly ended the match with a win.
